Spend the day on a beautiful 10-acre property in Campo, CA (an hour East of San Diego) with other natural building enthusiasts, enjoy a delicious healthy home-cooked lunch, and learn while helping to mix and apply high-lime cement plaster to the earthbag landscaping wall around the courtyard of an award-winning Net Zero Energy strawbale home. The day will be a mix of talking about building and hands-on doing. This is a rare opportunity to participate in a real build where your safety and education are the primary focus. No previous construction experience is required. All tools will be provided for your use during the workshop.

Simple Construct has run numerous strawbale building and natural plaster classes and workshops (see testimonials here). After hosting a successful earthbag building workshop in September, we are excited to add plastering earthbag walls, another practical and affordable technique, to the workshop offerings. This workshop will be taught by Rebecca Tasker and Mike Long, owners of Simple Construct, who each have more than 10 years experience in clay, lime, and high-lime cement plaster. They will be assisted by Nathan Wright and Wade Lucas who are graduates of Cal-Earth Institute‘s SuperAdobe apprenticeship program who studied all aspects of this form of earth building while helping to build and teach others at CalEarth’s campus in Hesperia, CA. Since leaving CalEarth, they have helped to build 9 SuperAdobe projects and have worked for Simple Construct building with straw bales and plastering with clay.

Here’s what former workshop attendees said about our workshops:

“Perfect amount of students. Easy to understand. Excellent presentation. Very knowledgeable instructors. Would highly recommend the workshops.” – A.C.

“It was a great experience– you guys have so much knowledge and passion for what you do and I appreciated the opportunity to learn from you.” – M.B.

“I loved the size of the workshops and how they were presented. Very easy to grasp the principles as they were presented. There was always time for questions and they were all answered honestly I feel. I felt that a great deal of consideration was given in the planning of the classes and there is nothing I can think of that I would want different. The information was extremely well presented. Both contractors were always very willing to answer questions and were very forthcoming with information. Often when attending this sort of thing there is a feeling coming from the people giving the class that they are better than those of us who do not know enough yet. I never once got the feeling like that from the contractors at this class. They were always very much interested in our needs and perception of the material.” – K.W.

Santa Cruz Straw Bale Building Workshop – 7/7 to 7/10/16

Want to get hands-on and learn a lot about straw bale building in a short time from knowledgable teachers? You’ll get to work on a real straw bale home alongside professionals like Jim Reiland of Many Hands Builders, David Arkin of Arkin-Tilt Architects, Michele Landegger of Boa Constructor, and us, Mike Long & Rebecca Tasker of Simple Construct, as well as other CASBA members.
